On October 29, 1923, Atatürk proclaimed the Turkish Republic with the goal of becoming part of Europe, but this goal has not yet been achieved. Turkey’s history has been significantly shaped by two men: the secular founder of the republic, Atatürk, and the reactionary religious activist Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Although seemingly pursuing different goals, they share a quest for power and autocracy. President Erdogan is actively working to knock Ataturk off his pedestal and put himself in his place.
laif photographer Murat Türemiş documented this year how Turkey is developing on the occasion of its 100th anniversary and what the reality looks like under President Erdogan.
