Thirty years ago, a dream became reality - and a political symbol became the canvas for one of the biggest art projects of the 20th century: the wrapping of the Reichstag building by the artist couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

What is now celebrated as a spectacular art event was the result of three decades of persistent persuasion. Christo and Jeanne-Claude repeatedly encountered resistance before they were finally given the green light in 1995. From June 24 to July 7, the Reichstag building in Berlin was wrapped in shiny silver fabric with blue ropes running through it. The wrapping not only emphasized the architecture, but also made the building appear in a completely new light – monumental, peaceful, free.

A remarkable coincidence: both artists were born on June 13, 1935 and would have been 90 years old this year.

Inseparably linked to this event is laif photographer Wolfgang Volz, who was not only the only official photographer, but also a close confidant of the »Christo family«. His photographs document not only the work itself, but also the creative process and the people behind it.
