For the third time in a row, TripAdvisor has named Dubai the world's most popular travel destination. In just a few decades, a desert village has been transformed into a megacity of superlatives: the tallest towers, huge malls, artificial islands, and pure luxury. Today, Dubai thrives primarily on tourism and international business.

However, critical reports about the authoritarian system are undesirable in order to preserve the perfect image for visitors. In 2023, 17.15 million guests visited the country, more than ever before. Tax exemptions and career opportunities attract many foreigners, who now make up more than half of the population. But behind the glamour lie poorly paid migrant workers and enormous environmental pollution.

For his photo project, Ingmar Jörn Nolting spent a week following influencer spots and discovered a staged city behind the perfect backdrop, where real life usually remains hidden.
