The Peace Congress took place in Berlin from 22 to 24 September. Over the three days, 150 young people from 33 different nations were invited to the capital to reflect on peace and develop concrete ideas to protect it in workshops, lectures and joint discussions.

The opening on Friday evening was addressed by Katja Keul, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Maksym Yemelianov, envoy of the Ukrainian Embassy, and Claudia Major, political scientist at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik. The keynote speaker was laif photographer Andy Spyra, who gave an insight into the work of a crisis photographer. The visual impact on the young people was enormous and the subsequent Q&A session was never-ending …. On Saturday, Andy then delved deep into the act of witnessing and recording history in his workshop. The workshop taught some of the key elements of writing history with the camera.

»It is important to me to impart knowledge about conflicts and to make wars more understandable by showing the people whose lives are linked to them. Peace starts with understanding. To understand, you need information. Information is important for decisions. Information is important for young and old alike, because only an informed and educated population can build peace.«

Many thanks to Verena Bartsch, Project Coordinator Peace Line and Christina Söder, Marketing & Education Officer at the Volksbund. Christina conducted an interview with Andy Spyra on the topic of »Capturing People – Creating Narratives«. Please read the full interview here.
