Syrians all over the world are celebrating the liberation from the hated regime by the Islamist militia Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies. The dictator Assad fled to Moscow with his family. The new rulers appear moderate, although their leader had links to al-Qaeda.
Alongside the joy, there is also uncertainty about the political direction in which the country will develop. Many people are searching for relatives who disappeared during the Assad regime or were imprisoned in one of the notorious torture prisons.
Photographers from the New York Times document the situation in Syria.
