In the 1980s, Max Galli set out to find and photograph the last remaining traditional corner shops, called Tante-Emma-Shop. Even back then, this type of retail outlet was already disappearing, and with it an entire facet of human coexistence.

People would enter the shop, greet the owner, express their wishes, and receive advice and service. If there were other customers present, they would exchange gossip and news from the neighborhood and socialize. »Tante Emma« brought the neighborhood together.

Max Galli/laif traveled through western and eastern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland for the project.
