The region around Görlitz once supplied East Germany with energy from coal. But after the economic collapse, the far-right AfD has gained strength in recent years. The change has unsettled people and they are looking to the extreme fringes and authoritarian social models for answers. Many are turning their backs on the region, especially the well-educated young people.

laif photographer Ingmar Björn Nolting traveled around Görlitz for the New York Times before the elections and met AfD voters, a country doctor, a green farmer and an entrepreneur with a migrant background who is looking for his future in West Germany and is leaving Görlitz, including four jobs.
