laif photographer Peter Rigaud met and photographed Russian entrepreneur and critic of Putin, Alexei Nawalny, for Der Spiegel when he was undergoing hospital treatment in Berlin for his poisoning. Upon his return to Russia, he was promptly imprisoned. Presumably, these pictures are the last portraits of the charismatic opposition figure in freedom. For his new book, political journalist David M. Herszenhorn chose the cover image from this photo shoot. The volume “The Dissident” will be published in October. Many thanks to our partner agency Redux Pictures, who licensed the photo along with world rights in all languages.
