At the center is an impressive story from Malaysia: the habitat of the Malaysian tiger, a big cat threatened with extinction, is shrinking dramatically. Deforestation and the expansion of palm oil plantations are pushing the animals ever closer to inhabited areas. The result: dangerous encounters between humans and animals, with increasing numbers of victims on both sides, despite legal protection for the tigers.
James Whitlow Delano has been documenting environmental destruction in Southeast Asia for decades. With his camera, he not only accompanies the changes in the animal world, but also the effects on indigenous communities such as the Temiar, Jahai and Batek. His images tell of a profound crisis and of how closely the fate of nature and mankind are interwoven.
The video series vividly demonstrates how powerful visual storytelling can make complex contexts tangible. Visual Storytelling is therefore not only a look behind the scenes of documentary photography, but also a plea for committed journalism.
