While the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg was considered the largest car factory in the world for decades, production facilities are being built in China that can produce twice as many vehicles - fully automated and at record speed.

Photographer Qilai Shen visited the Zeekr plant in Ningbo for the New York Times and documented how China is rising to become the new superpower of electromobility with state-of-the-art technology and enormous speed. His pictures show an industry in transition – and a future that has already begun.
